Viktor Beránek has spent nearly fifty years as caretaker of Chata pod Rysmi, the highest hut in the High Tatras. He upheld the porter tradition and managed life at 2250 meters without helicopter supplies, but now faces being replaced as the hut’s operators push for modernization.
